    Sigh.
When I have to find and read an architecture document so I know what to download things have become way too complicated. The great thing about Sametime was it was a simple single server install. It was a minor irritation that you had to install on a separate Domino server. Now we have 4 or 5 separate components and one of those components (Media Manager) has 3 sub components that require their own servers. Has IBM gone mad or is this an attempt to sell more hardware?
    Sigh.

It gets better. You also need WAS and DB2 if you want to match current functionality.

Check out the getting started PDF. Hilarious for a "is a basic Lotus Sametime 8.5.x server deployment."

Media Manager does not require 3 servers. It can be deployed on a single server. How many servers you need depends on the scale of deployment and number of users, video sessions.

    Dennis
Sametime 8.5 doee not simply match 8.0.2 function. If that was the case why bother releasing or upgrading to a new a product. 8.5 vastly exceeds the capabilities and ease of use addressing long requested customer improvements in critical areas of web confereincg and video and many other areas.

Additionally, if all you need its what you use today you can still simply install a single Domino based Community and Meetings server, but you will miss out on the great real new value.

    Rob, thanks for responding.

If I check out the image I reference to improve the workings of sametime in the new version I need to setup a couple of WAS servers and DB2. I know both as I'm also a Websphere admin, but this is probably not an easy upgrade for a normal Domino admin. Offcourse we want more functionalilty, but the deployment model is overcomplicated (this is all said before actually installing offcourse)

And when I get to that point, I can still create meetings and chat. Ok, it'll look better (which I've been hoping for) but the basic functionality remains the same doesn't it?

We put a lot of effort into making installation and deployment of multifaceted Sametime deployments and especially of DB2 and WAS automatic . If you follow the instructions for Sametime System Console you should be able to configure LDAP and other settings once, then get all the server code installed silently.

Functions of Community Server and 'Classic' Meetings server is mostly the same as 8.0.2, but new platforms like Domino 8.5 and Windows 2008 are now supported.

The new 8.5 Meetings server performs the same function but in a manner that is vastly simpler and faster to use and eliminates many deployment complexities and challenges - eg eliminates a large Java applet for MRC.

Keep us posted on how you get on.

We just have Domino and use the meeting server. In the documentation it talks about the Classic Meeting Server (which is what we need to use I guess - shame though). Is this just part of the Community server, or is there a separate upgrade? There's no separate part number for it.

I've run the install for the Meeting Server but it asks for a Websphere server

Rob: I'll keep you posted. This year has little days left, but I'll give it a go in the new year.

    Thanks for your replies!

The Community server install contains the Domino based Classic Meetings server - I believe thats correct part number. You can check that pretty quickly by seeing if the meeting center opens when you enter the server community server name from a browser.

    @Rob, from the doco:

"The Lotus Sametime Media Manager uses three components. In a pilot environment, the Lotus Sametime Media Manager components can all be installed on one server, but in a production environment, you should install each of the components on its own server."

Thanks Rob - the meetings are working fine, but the 'classic' mode. Was hoping for the new version without having to use websphere, that's all (various blog posts I've read haven't mentioned the need for websphere)
